What to Expect

What to Expect Before and After Botox Injections

Neurotoxin injections (most commonly called Botox injections), are a popular, non-surgical treatment designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re considering receiving this treatment for the first time, it’s important to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Before Your Treatment

Consultation: Before receiving your injections, you’ll have a consultation with a licensed provider to discuss your goals, medical history, and any potential concerns. This ensures that the injections are a safe and suitable treatment for you.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E) for at least 24-48 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of bruising.
  • Avoid engaging in any activities that may cause facial flushing on the day of your treatment to avoid vasodilation, which can put you at higher risk for bleeding/bruising from your treatment.
  • Limit alcohol consumption for 24 hours before your treatment.
  • Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup or skincare products.
During Your Treatment
  • The procedure typically takes 10-20 minutes.
  • A fine needle is used to inject ‘Tox into targeted muscles.
  • Discomfort is minimal, often described as a slight pinch or pressure.
  • No anesthesia is required, but we do offer numbing cream at an additional price if requested at the time of booking.
After Your Treatment

Immediate Effects:

  • Some minor redness, swelling, or bruising may appear at injection sites but should subside within a few hours to a day.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas to prevent the medication from spreading to unintended muscles.
  • Remain upright for at least four hours after treatment, just to ensure that the medication does not migrate.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, active skin care ingredients (ie retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, etc.) and excessive sun exposure for 24 hours.
When Will You See Results?
  • Initial effects may become noticeable within 3-5 days.
  • Full results typically appear within 10-14 days as the medication fully settles into the muscles.
  • During this period, some mild asymmetry may be noticeable, which usually evens out as the product takes full effect.
  • Results last about 3-4 months, after which follow-up treatments may be needed to maintain smooth, youthful-looking skin.
When should I come in for a dose adjustment?

‘Tox injections take time to fully settle into the muscles and reach their maximum effect. While some individuals may start noticing changes within a few days, the full impact of the treatment is not realized until at least 14 days post-injection. During this time:

  • The neuromodulator is still actively working to relax the targeted muscles.
  • Any initial asymmetry or unevenness often resolves naturally as the product distributes evenly.
  • Making adjustments too soon can lead to overcorrection, which may cause an unnatural appearance or unnecessary additional treatment.
  • A proper evaluation at the two-week mark allows your provider to assess the final results accurately and determine if additional units are needed.

By waiting the full 14 days (or longer for larger areas), we ensure that any touch-ups or modifications are truly necessary, leading to optimal, natural-looking results.

Possible Side Effects

While neurotoxin treatments are generally safe, some individuals may experience temporary side effects such as:

  • Mild bruising or swelling.
  • Headache or flu-like symptoms.
  • Temporary muscle weakness near the injection site.

If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, contact your provider promptly.

Maintaining Your Results
  • Follow up with your provider to determine the ideal schedule for touch-ups.
  • Maintain a good skincare routine, including sunscreen and hydration.
  • Combining this treatment with other collagen boosting procedures such as chemical peels, microneedling, or stem cell facials may provide longer lasting results.
